Lübeck Day 2 :) (10,10.10)

This morning I had a long hot shower, it was quite nice not to worry if I was taking too long in the shower. We had a small breakfast at the hotel. They had cold cuts, bread, toast, hard boiled eggs, cake, and juices. The most exciting part was that they had peanut butter!!! I was saddened when I tried it though. It tasted like poo compared to our peanut butter. I really miss my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! I had cake and a cold cut sandwich for breakfast. My host family was appalled that I would eat "sweeties" for breakfast. They all had hard boiled eggs for breakfast and cheese and meat. They also had these raw patties of sausage. I thought I was going to throw up watching they eat this raw sausage. It was so disgusting! What is with Europe and their raw meats?! Jeez!! And they kept remarking how good it was.

After breakfast we went to the shore to walk around near that area. We were having a brunch for my host Mom’s sister’s birthday. The area was really nice. There were tons of sailboats! Corry said that 2/3 people in that area know how to sail, herself included. Darn, why couldn’t I be here in summer! We saw huge car carriers that were going to various places like Sweden, etc. Just the day before there was an explosion on a car carrier in the area. 240 people were on the boat. Fortunately no one died, but several had serious injuries. Corry told us how her father used to make sails before he retired. Now he started his own metal shop. She showed us some flagpoles in town that he made. We went to a few little shops in the area, but fortunately I exercised self control.

We ate at a restaurant called Lucifer, or devil in English. The brunch was interesting. The food was such a wide variety. There were salads, pasta, potatoes, lasagna, cold cuts, 3 different kinds of fish, including raw salmon, 6 kinds of deserts, and many more things that I can’t remember. For the beverage choice they offered orange juice or Prosecco. I thought it was interesting that they offered Prosecco that early in the morning, but then again it is Germany. Corry’s brother, sister-in-law, father, and sister were there. Her brother is a doctor. He does psychology and neurology. What a combo!!! The best part…he actually knew Abbott Labs, the company I’ll be working for starting in January. He said he prescribes our drugs. Yay, keeping a job for me haha! He was so nice and sweet! And he spoke perfect English when I lacked German. He said he has spend a lot of time in the US. He was in Chicago a couple of years ago for a conference and rented a boat to go sailing. I was quite impressed! He said when we was younger he spent a few months in the US. There was a service where you would drive someone’s car to a specific location. Often people used this when they were moving. They gave you grace days in between so you could sightsee, and you only had to pay for gas. I’m not sure if there was some sort of compensation or not. I thought that was a cool way to travel.

Her father was such a funny man!! He was telling me how he has been married to this lady from Africa for 8 years now. (Corry’s mother died years back.) He stopped midsentence when he reached for his wedding ring and it wasn’t there. He started freaking out, wondering where it was. I tried to look around for him, but Corry nor her brother were concerned. He said, “Oh well, I’ll just have to make myself another one before she gets back.” He said they split their time between Lübeck and Africa. She was in Africa at the moment. He proceeded to tell me how his cell phone wouldn’t work, and his wife was trying to call him for the past few days. When she finally got a hold of him, he said she was blubbering about how she thought he left her and found a new woman. This just made me laugh and laugh, especially the way he imitated her.

It was such a fun day meeting her family!! They were amazing, so sweet, and hilarious! It definitely reminded me of my family back home. I was sad to leave, but I knew I had a lot studying ahead of me yet. On the way back we stopped by my host parent’s vacation house. They rent it out to vacationers. I didn’t get a chance to see the inside, only the outside. It was huge!!! It had 4 bedrooms. They had solar panels on the roof even. It was a very nice house and so close to the beach! During my fall break there were coming to Lübeck to stay for a week. I was sad that I wouldn’t be back with them! But Italy would be amazing too!

On the way back, I tried studying again, but their driving made me car sick. I have never gotten car sick in my life! That says how bad their driving is. So I ended up just sleeping the whole way back again. We got back around 7PM. I spent the rest of the night studying for my European Business Cultures midterm tomorrow. Around 10PM, I wondered into the kitchen to find out if Abendbrot (evening bread) was ready yet. But they were all in bed!! I hadn’t eaten since noon. Wth, I needed another meal. So I made myself 2 pieces of butter bread. I crammed as much studying into my mind as possible and went to bed.
