I slept late today. Then just bummed around doing homework, cleaning my room, and doing wash. Tonight we had tickets to the Ballet Swan Lake. This was going to be my first ballet. I was super excited! Malia and I went for pasta before the ballet. We went to a little pasta express place. I never can pass up a good bowl of pasta. I had pesto pasta. It’s never the same as Noodles & Company’s pesto pasta, but it satisfied my urge. It was a small little restaurant, with only one guy working in there. We were the only customers in there. We attempted to speak German to the guy, but he just reverted to English and told us we need to work on our German haha. The worker was chatting with his friend in English, very strange to hear in Germany.
We made our way to the ballet. It turns out the orchestra was striking, because they feel they should receive more money in wages. Apparently on their last performance the orchestra walked out during intermission and they had to find someone to play the piano for the second half of the performance. We were fortunate and they just had a replacement orchestra there.
The show was really amazing! I am embarrassed to admit it, but I didn’t know the story of Swan Lake, so everything was new to me. I thought the dancers were amazing! I can’t even imagine doing those moves. I remember watching movies, probably Save the Last Dance lol, where the ballet dancers’ toes bleed because it’s so hard on your feet. The show was a little long for my first one, or either the seats were too uncomfortable for my butt for that long. It definitely would have helped to know the story first, but that was my own fault. All I can say is those dancers are sooo fit! Even from where we were sitting you could see their muscles! Men and women alike…they move so AMAZINGLY! I was in awe.
After the ballet, Malia, Trevor, Anna, & I decided to go out. We went to a random bar near Malia’s neighborhood. My one pet peve about German bars and restaurants is that they are NOT smoke free. This really bothers me! I hate, hate, hate smoking. I understand that they have a right to smoke, but I would just rather not have to breathe it in. Every bar is filled with smoke! I felt like I smoked a pack of cigarettes that night by the time we left. It was a fun night. I played my first game of foosball, of course I lost haha. We were at the bar for quite some time and it was 5AM before we knew it. We couldn’t go home without going to Curry 31, one of the most famous currywurst places in Berlin. By this time it was freezing outside, but as soon as we got to the stand, it was packed. Apparently, currywurst (and döner) are the drunk foods in Berlin, since there is no Taco Bell ;) We each had a currywurst and French fries. It was probably the best drunk food I’ve had! It definitely hit the spot. I should say that in Berlin, the nightlife starts very late and goes into the morning. I believe I got home somewhere around 6 or 6:30AM.
