We had German class everyday as normal this week, even though it was midterms week. After German, I crammed for the business midterm. The midterm turned out fine. It only had 2 essay questions: one about Euro Disney and one comparing countries in Europe. It had been a long time since I’d had an essay exam. My hand was cramping after writing 3 pages. I concluded my test with having 5 pages of essay. Oh and I should note that I had a rough draft of my term paper due today also. It was comparing newspapers in the US and Germany, and whether we thought the Internet would replace newspapers. Wasn't a good weekend for a mini vacation, but as usual everything worked out just fine - story of college: stressing, somehow everything comes out just fine, rinse and repeat :)
That night we were invited to dinner at our neighbor’s house. He had some American friends in and my host family thought it would be nice for me to socialize with them. I swore to them that I really needed to study for my midterm tomorrow instead, but they weren’t taking no for an answer. So I said I could only do a very short dinner over there. At that point I only had 1/3 of the study guide completed.
Our neighbor is an English teacher at one of the universities in Berlin. He previously had an American girlfriend and spend considerable time in the US, so he has many American friends. He looks to be around 60. His friends were a lady and her grandson. They were from Minnesota. It was really nice to talk with them and hear about their travels so far. The guy was getting ready to take the LSAT and apply to law schools. His grandmother was previously a professor. They both were very smart.
It was a nice evening. We had salad with SALAD DRESSING!! I was so excited for the salad dressing I didn’t even care that it was some obscure flavor. We also had Greek chicken. It was pretty much like baked chicken in a tomato sauce to me, but it was great to have hot food that was meat. During the entire dinner our neighbor had a cigarette in his mouth. He didn’t even eat; he just smoked. It was hard to sit there for that long with the smoke in my face.
I intended to leave dinner after 30 minutes, but at the 2 hours mark we were still there. I decided to excuse myself. They were so surprised that I was leaving to go study. Later when my host mom got home, she said I should have stayed and talked with the guy. She says he wanted to go out on a date with me. Either she made this up to make me feel guilty, or I am oblivious to these things. Either way, I needed to study. I almost gagged when I smelled my hair. I reeked so badly. I considered showering, but decided that would waste precious study time. I stayed up as long as I could keep my eyes open and then gave up on my study guide. I had gotten through 2/3 of it. That night was another short night of sleep.
